The competition has closed and the winners will be announced soon.
We were blown away by the response to our Firewood Competition, with more than 400 heartfelt nominations pouring in from across Invercargill and Gore. It’s clear that our community is full of everyday heroes who light up the lives of others.
After much deliberation (and a few tough decisions), our judges selected three winners:
Michelle (Invercargill): Michelle was nominated by her husband Graeme, who at 71, suffers from Parkinson’s disease and arthritis. Michelle cares for Graeme and also takes some on childcare responsibilities for their daughter so she can work.
Manu (Invercargill) Manu was nominated by her daughter Leilani. Leilani entered her mum into the competition to recognise all of the ways she supports her, whether it be making sure she gets to and from school or with her netball team and Pasifika dance rehearsals.
Euan (Gore) Euan was nominated by his former colleague Michelle. Euan is now on dialysis which limits his ability to cut and carry his own wood. Previously, he cut wood and gave it away to the elderly, so Michelle thought it was his turn to be on the receiving end.
Each of these deserving individuals received a free load of dry firewood, thanks to the generous support of our Good Wood suppliers: Waikiwi Wood and Coal and Hippo's Heaps.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate someone special.
