What have Southland’s councils been doing to address our changing climate?

Murihiku Southland’s four councils, in partnership with Te Ao Mārama, are developing a regional response to climate change through the Regional Climate Change Working Group. In 2024 your input helped shaped a local government climate change strategy, now it’s time to build on that foundation.

What is the Regional Framework for Action (RFfA)?

Join us in shaping a regional framework for action (RFfA) that reflects what matters to you about our changing climate. This will define and prioritise what we do and the initiatives needed to achieve the aspirations in the regional climate strategy. The RFfA will enable each agency involved to create Action Plans for their areas. The RFfA will evaluate and define collaborative actions, and identify opportunities for collaboration beyond local government – empowering the aspirations, energies, and creativity of communities and industry.

    What is the RFfA process?

The RFfA is being developed during 2025 by the Regional Climate Change Working Group members and is scheduled to be recommended to partner agencies for endorsement mid-2025. From 2026, the idea is to develop Regional Climate Action Plans triennially to coincide with Council Long-term Plans.

    What are the key areas?

    • Regional climate leadership
    • Understanding climate change science and risk
    • Adaptation planning for our future
    • Enabling regional net zero 2050
    • Implementation, monitoring, and evaluation
