Flood protection and drainage management bylaw

Now consulting – Your views on flood protection and drainage management

Feedback on the proposed Southland Flood Protection and Drainage Management Bylaw 2019 is now open.

Environment Southland maintains flood protection and control schemes to protect property, lives and livelihoods. Council owns flood banks, detention dams, bridges, culverts and tide gate structures which all assist in controlling flooding.

To protect these assets, a bylaw is needed to manage and protect the effective operation and integrity of the flood control works.

The bylaw will not restrict all development within a floodway or near stop banks, but it does give Council the ability to base its decisions on the effects of a proposal before granting an authority for the activity. This process is similar to a simplified consent application.

Maintaining and improving flood protection infrastructure is an important part of Environment Southland’s work. Through our comprehensive annual maintenance programme, we look after 458 kilometres of flood banks across Southland.
